Abstract

Purpose: The purpose of this study was to examine the effects of hand acupressure for elders as a nursing intervention to decrease blood pressure.

Methods: This research was a quasi-experimental study with 52 patients (experimental group: 25, control group: 27). For the experimental group, hand acupressure was given by trained research aids whom specialist recognized for their acupressure skill. The collected data were analyzed using x2-test, Fisher¡¯s exact test, t-test and repeated measures ANOVA with the SPSS/WIN 20.0 program.

Results: There were significant decreases in systolic and diastolic blood pressure according to time. But there was no significant difference between experimental and control group.

Conclusion: Although the results of the study indicate that hand acupressure is effective in lowering blood pressure, there is a need for further study before the results can be generalized.
